High Mileage Bill Out of Committee (2020)

Another successful day at the statehouse!

Our High Mileage bill is headed to the Senate floor, this after passing out of the full Transportation Committee unanimously. My hope is having it sent to the Governor’s desk without a single no vote. (I have never witnessed a bill that did this.) This shows that our current relationship with our lawmakers is strong and we need to keep it that way. Remember one bad move can ruin a lot of hard work.

Call to action on the “Hands-Free Act” - Feb 2020

Call to action on the “Hands-Free Act”

S723 is NOT DEAD!  There has been a misunderstanding regarding the post claiming that the bill has been killed by trial lawyers. (I, unfortunately, was not able to attend this meeting) This is what senate staff has conveyed to me today as to what happened at the committee meeting. A certain senator asked if he moved his phone from a cup holder to the dash, would he be breaking the law. The short answer is yes. This led to a line of questioning that was detrimental to the bill by the minority. (Keep in mind that not all of the bill's supporting committee members were in attendance, but a quorum was present)  In a move to stop a committee vote that surely would kill the bill, The chair decided that it would be better to “carry the bill forward” meaning that a vote would not be taken at this time. I am told that it should be back up for committee debate in a few weeks. What can you do? Contact the senate transportation committee members and voice your opinion!......

H3695 House Vote - Passed

From Bill Fuller

On Lobby Day 2020, ABATE members passed out our newsletters and strategically placed a press release in the front highlighting our issues for this legislative session. This timely move by our members has yielded results. Today H3695 (our high mileage bill) received its second-reading and vote. The vote was 117 for and 0 against!

Thanks to all that participate in getting the word out. You do make a difference.

Special Election - State Coordinator - 2020

We called for a special election at the November BOD meeting to fill the vacant office of the State Coordinator. As of this writing we only have one nominee. Nominations will close at the January BOD meeting. If you wish to run for this office or nominate someone, you need to contact Johnny.

The current nominee is Doug Lavere, he has written an article and it was placed in the December issue of the newsletter.

The Board of Directors will be voting for the new State Coordinator at the March BOD meeting. All Chapters need to cast their votes before the end of February, so your Area Coordinator will know which way to vote.
